Field note / October 23, 2026

Give the next 90 days a realistic job.

A long preparation list can make every gap feel equally urgent. Choose a small set of priorities that your team can move with the people and time available. The 90-day plan is a working horizon, not a promise that preparation will be complete.

Choose the problem before the task

Start with what the review surfaced. If routine approvals always wait for the owner, the priority might be reducing that dependence. A first action could be to list the recurring decisions, rather than buying new software or rewriting every process.

Check whether the action depends on missing information. If it does, finding that information may be the first task. Leave the larger decision open until there is enough evidence to make it.

Make completion observable

Australia’s official business guidance recommends specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound goals, supported by actions, resources, accountability and regular review. These are useful planning habits across many types of business. Read the official guide to setting business goals.

Give each workbook action one owner, a due date and a result someone can verify. “Improve reporting” is difficult to finish. “Review the latest reporting pack with the bookkeeper and list unresolved questions” describes work a person can complete and discuss.

Use the periods to sequence work

In the first 30 days, clarify the gap and gather what is needed. In the next period, put a change into practice. In the final period, check whether the change works and what remains unresolved. Adjust this sequence to the situation; urgent operational or professional advice needs should not wait for a workbook milestone.

A practical action has a clear result, one responsible person, a realistic date and a way to check completion.

Review the result, not just the checkmark

At a regular review, ask what changed, what evidence supports that and what blocked the work. Update dates honestly. A completed count records entered activity; it is not a readiness score or a predicted sale outcome.

Read how to record supporting evidence, then build your own next 90 days.
